Austin- 2nd Day

SHE SAID:
The second day in Austin was much more to my liking. First we went to Salt Lick BBQ. Still trying to decipher between CA, TX, & TN bbq, we had to hit this Man vs. Food joint. I'm so glad we did. The food was good, not as good as Amarillo, but very good. A little more dry. The best part though was when they let me go into the kitchen and get photos of the pit. I got to be right there were they cook everything.

After lunch, we went to S. Congress St. This is the Austin I wanted. SOOOOOO cool. If you could imagine Brooklyn & San Francisco together with a Texas flare, you might be close to how cool this place was. It was like walking down my perfect street with cute restaurants, stores, live music, and bars. They had this area that was all airstream trailers selling food. It looked like the coolest trailer park you have ever been to. The best one was Hey Cupcake. We got a Michael Jackson cupcake- chocolate with cream cheese frosting. Yummmy! We also went to Home Slice Pizza. On top of all of that was a lot of shopping and walking. I can't wait to go back. We even saw the infamous queen of Austin- Leslie. Mario couldn't get over how "she" was a dude with boobs.

Lastly, I want to talk about this great sculpture I fell in love with. During the 1800's, Sam Houston tried to move the state capital from Austin because he felt the city was too vulnerable to Mexican invasions. As Houston raided the city, a housewife, Angelina Eberly, fired a cannon into a nearby building to wake everyone up. The statue was of her firing the cannon. The best part is she was barefoot. It is just one more piece of evidence that women can do so much more under tougher conditions. She didn't even get to wear shoes when she saved the city. Women rule!

All in all, I really liked Austin. I definitely want to come back. I did forget to mention we visited University of Texas. Mario was sooooo happy. We tried to get into the stadium, but it was under construction. :( It was fun to be back on a college campus.

HE SAID:
The second day was a lot of fun. We hung out on South Congress and went to a bunch of shops that have all sorts of fun and weird things (hence the Keep Austin Weird slogan) Des had been wanting to go to Hey Cupcake and we got a chance to go and get a cupcake there (the Michael Jackson, wich has a Vanilla frosting and Chocolate base, ha ha!) We walked around a little more to explore and then went back to 6th Street so I could get some Longhorn stuff. After all that we headed back to Bikini's (you can never get enough) to have a night cap and get ready for the long (10 hour) drive ahead.

I'm sad to be leaving Austing, but am already making plans to come back and spend more time in this city (in the winter because the heat is unbearable in the summer).
Stay tuned for New Orleans which is next!
